Renault has spent the past few years trying to prove that its badge can work on something more ambitious than an ordinary family hatchback or crossover. The Rafale is probably the clearest example yet, and now Renault has pushed its flagship a little further with a limited edition called Hypnotic.
Only 1,500 will be built for Europe.
Underneath the satin-black treatment is the most sophisticated Rafale currently available, the 300-hp E-Tech 4×4 plug-in hybrid developed with help from Alpine engineers. That means Renault hasn’t created a limited edition around the cheaper 200-hp hybrid and simply added expensive-looking trim. The interesting hardware is already there.
The powertrain combines a combustion engine with three electric motors for a total of 300 hp, while the battery provides up to 105 kilometers of electric driving according to Renault. Four-wheel drive is standard, as is the 4Control Advanced rear-wheel-steering system.
There’s also adaptive suspension that uses a forward-facing camera to read the road and prepare the dampers for what’s coming. It’s an unusually elaborate chassis setup for a Renault, although perhaps that’s exactly the point of the Rafale.
Hypnotic is mostly about what Renault puts around that hardware.
The body is finished exclusively in satin Forest Black, accompanied by a black grille, gloss-black roof details and boot spoiler, plus 21-inch satin-finish wheels. Even the Atelier Alpine badge has been darkened. It’s not exactly subtle, but neither does it look like somebody emptied an accessories catalogue onto the car.
Inside, Renault mixes black Alcantara with textured upholstery and blue, white and red stitching. Each of the 1,500 cars gets its own numbered plaque, while the Alpine logo in the seatback is illuminated.
More importantly, several options from the normal Rafale have become standard equipment. The Hypnotic gets Renault’s Solarbay panoramic roof, which can change opacity electrically, along with a head-up display, heated windscreen and Harman Kardon audio system.
That equipment helps explain the €63,550 French price.
A regular 300-hp Rafale Atelier Alpine costs €60,250 in France, so Hypnotic adds €3,300. Once you consider that the Solarbay roof alone is listed at €1,500 and the Harman Kardon system costs another €1,000 on Atelier Alpine, the limited edition suddenly looks less extravagant than its name suggests.
There is still an interesting question hanging over the whole car.
More than €63,000 is serious money for a Renault. Buyers shopping at that level don’t lack alternatives carrying badges with considerably more premium history.
But Renault doesn’t need to convince thousands of them. It needs to find 1,500 people across Europe, and the Hypnotic will be sold in 14 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Romania.
Orders open on October 1, with the first deliveries planned before the end of 2026. The car will also appear at the Paris Motor Show in October.
The Rafale was already Renault testing how far upward it could stretch. Hypnotic is Renault testing whether anybody wants it to stretch a little further.
And at only 1,500 cars, it doesn’t need very many people to say yes.
