2028 Nissan Xterra Previewed Again as Fresh CGI Points to a Rugged Return

Nissan has now confirmed the Xterra name for a new sport-utility project, ending months of uncertainty around the model’s future. The company released a short teaser earlier this month and linked the new vehicle to production in the United States before the close of 2028. For the first time, the project moved from rumor into an official timeline.

The teaser gave little away, though enough details appeared for digital artists to begin filling missing areas. Nissan showed a front section with a flat nose and brand lettering placed above the grille. A narrow opening carries yellow daytime-running lights between hood and bumper. Lower down, the image suggests a split-headlamp layout, with larger light units positioned beside the grille. The hood also carries a raised shape with stronger surface definition.

Nissan states the next Xterra will use a body-on-frame base, which matches the direction expected for an off-road-focused return. The company also confirmed the vehicle as a proper off-roader, and internal timing places launch distance at more than two years. Earlier statements had already mentioned a new Xterra, though this marks the first official teaser linked directly to the vehicle.

Production is scheduled for the United States by late 2028, provided the current plan stays unchanged. Shortly after Nissan released the teaser, AutoYa assembled several renderings into a video and published the material online. Those images form the basis for the latest visual interpretation.

One digital artist expanded the front view into a full vehicle. In this version, the future Xterra receives front underbody protection, two recovery hooks, plastic cladding across the lower body, and all-terrain rubber around each wheel. The side profile shown in the render is not official, because Nissan has not revealed that angle, yet the artist added one anyway.

The same study gives the model thick side sections and a tall roofline. A rear three-quarter proportion appears boxy and upright. There is also a familiar reference point. From certain angles, the rendering recalls the Land Rover Freelander, at least in window shape and body posture.

Still, the front remains closest to official material because Nissan itself supplied those clues. The side windows, doors, and rear quarter treatment belong entirely to interpretation. Another teaser sequence from Nissan is likely before launch, since the company appears to be building momentum gradually around the return.

For now, the new Xterra exists in two forms at once: one official front-end teaser and one broad digital guess built around that limited source. The name is confirmed. The platform direction is confirmed. Much else still waits.
